In a decisive move to address the lingering controversies surrounding the proposed reintroduction of the International Cargo Tracking Note (ICTN), the Maritime Reporters’ Association of Nigeria (MARAN) has announced plans to convene a high-level industry roundtable on February 27, 2025.

As Nigeria’s foremost maritime media association, MARAN is taking the lead in fostering dialogue among stakeholders to dissect the contentious ICTN scheme and forge a path forward for the industry.

The event, set to hold at the MARAN International Press Center in Apapa, will bring together key players from the public and private sectors.

Among the distinguished speakers expected at the roundtable are Dr. Eugene Nweke of the Sea Empowerment and Research Center (SEREC), and Dr. Segun Musa, Managing Director of Widescope Group, both of whom will provide expert insights into the ICTN debate.

Also scheduled to participate are Dr. Alban Igwe of the Importers Association of Nigeria and a representative from the Shippers’ Association Lagos State (SALS).

In a bid to capture government perspectives on the matter, two critical agencies will deliver presentations: the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), the current custodian of the ICTN initiative; and the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA).

Speaking on the rationale for the roundtable, MARAN President, Mr. Godfrey Bivbere, emphasized the urgent need to bring clarity and consensus to the subject of ICTN.

“Since the news of the planned reintroduction of ICTN emerged, the industry has been sharply divided. Proponents and opponents alike have presented strong arguments, yet a clear path forward remains elusive,” Bivbere stated.

“As the leading maritime press association in Nigeria, and in line with our commitment to industry advocacy, MARAN has taken the initiative to bring all contending parties to the table.

“This forum will provide an avenue for constructive engagement and, ultimately, a resolution that benefits the sector and the national economy,” he added.
