By Nifemi Coker
Apapa Port Customs Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has set a new milestone by achieving a daily revenue collection of ₦18.9 billion, marking the highest amount ever recorded by the command in history. This new record surpasses the previous high of ₦18.2 billion set in October 2024.
A statement by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SC Tunde Ayagbalo, noted that the Area Controller, Apapa Port Customs Command, Comptroller Babatunde Olomu, attributed the achievement to the dedication of officers, the continued enforcement of compliance, and the promotion of industrial harmony within the port.
Olomu also credited the unwavering support of the Comptroller General of Customs (CGC) for making the feat possible.
Working under the guidance of the CGC, Olomu led productive discussions with the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) to resolve conflicts involving port users and truckers, particularly over the Eto’o call-up system, which had previously caused severe traffic congestion along the Apapa Port corridor.
Additionally, Comptroller Olomu intervened to prevent the planned strike action by maritime workers and freight forwarders, which could have disrupted port operations. His efforts helped maintain a smooth workflow, ensuring uninterrupted import and export activities.
Reflecting on the record revenue and the improved work environment, the CAC emphasized the critical role ports play in national economic development, especially Apapa Port, which handles the largest volume of cargo in Nigeria.
He said, “It is essential to keep our ports functioning efficiently, particularly Apapa, as it significantly impacts both local and global trade.”
He acknowledged the CGC, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, for prioritizing robust stakeholder engagement, which led to successful interventions in disputes among government agencies, terminal operators, and other port stakeholders. Olomu added, “Our interventions have fostered uninterrupted trade and boosted confidence among port users.”
Looking ahead, Comptroller Olomu expressed optimism about continued success in 2025, stating, “This ₦18.9 billion daily revenue is just the beginning of even greater accomplishments this year.
“We remain vigilant in our fight against smuggling, with our officers always prepared to detect and combat evasion tactics, such as under-declaration and false declarations.”
