Former Minister of Interior and Industry, Capt. Emmanuel Iheanacho, has said that the success of Nigeria’s maritime sector rests heavily on the shoulders of the press.
Iheanacho made the submission at the Maritime Reporters Association of Nigeria (MARAN) reception to celebrate its past presidents which held in Lagos on Friday.
Represented by Dr. Emeka Akabogu, Iheanacho shared that the media serves as the essential bridge to a sustainable blue economy.
Outlining four critical pillars through which journalism influences development, he noted that many genuine industry problems only enter the consciousness of policymakers once the media shines a consistent and informed light on them.
He warned that inaccurate or sensationalist reporting could be inherently destructive as the sector relies on international investor confidence while urging practitioners to view maritime journalism as a strategic national assignment that requires rigorous, evidence-based analysis rather than mere event reporting.
In his remarks, Chairman, MARAN Caretaker Committee, Mr. Tunde Ayodele, paid tribute to the legacy of the founding members who established the association as young professionals, noting that their vision remains foundational to the industry’s growth.
Further recognition came from industry stakeholders acknowledging MARAN as a vital partner in promoting safe, secure, and environmentally sustainable shipping across West and Central Africa.
Ultimately, the gathering reinforced a singular conclusion: Nigeria cannot build a robust maritime future without a technically proficient and credible press to guide public discourse and track government commitments.
